Decongestant nasal spray can improve quality of life

Research from consumer healthcare company Haleon has shown that using 0.1% xylometazoline hydrochloride nasal spray to treat congestion from a common cold can significantly improve patient quality of life as well as manage nasal symptoms.

Patients (n=102) were given Otrivine (0.1% xylometazoline hydrochloride) nasal spray for use as needed for up to seven days, with quality of life (QoL) measures assessed using the Wisconsin Upper Respiratory Symptom Survey-21 tool, with additional QoL questions added.

The study’s key findings include:

  • Nasal congestion improved significantly from day one of use
  • Quality of life scores improved by 70 per cent after last dose compared to baseline
  • There was a 70 per cent improvement in sleep quality, vitality and physical activity measures, and 80 per cent improvement in social activity and sensation (taste and smell) after the last dose versus baseline.

Dr Pranab Kalita, global medical leader at Haleon, commented: “The study confirms not only the effectiveness of xylometazoline hydrochloride 0.1% in treating nasal congestion but also demonstrates the significant improvement in overall well-being and quality of life resulting from treatment.”
